Spelt and farro are very similar grains, often being confused as being one in the same. But these are actually two individual wheat grains with different nutrients and benefits.

In fact, farro refers to three different grains, farro grande, farro piccolo, and farro medio. Also referred to ass long, medium, and cracked farro. These three differ in taste, texture, and nutrients.

Spelt, also known as hulled wheat, is a nutrient-rich grain that is often ground and used as a wheat flour. It is rich in minerals such as phosphorus, niacin, thiamine, and manganese.

High in dietary fiber, spelt is especially beneficial for your gut and digestive system. It is also great for heart health, and is said to be helpful in preventing heart disease.

This grain is an energy booster, with high amounts of protein and vitamins that give you long lasting energy without an energy crash. It is useful in regulating cholesterol, and can help lower the risk of diabetes.

Farro is classified as Triticum dicoccum, whereas spelt is Triticum spelta. The differences between the two are subtle but notable. There are differences in taste, size, shape, and texture.
Farro has a nutty flavor, whereas spelt is sweeter and has a lighter taste. Spelt has a more round and short shape than farro, so it is possible to distinguish one from the other.

Like spelt, farro is fiber-rich, but is also known for its high protein and iron content. It is lower in gluten than spelt, being an ancient grain. Ancient grains most often have a lower gluten content than other grains.
