How to Make the Best Healthy Trail Mix Yum

December 09, 2022 2 min read

I never thought of making trail mix at home, I was perfectly happy with buying a bag of mixed nuts and raisins before going out on a hike. Now, after making it on my own, I won't go back to storebought! Trail mix is so much more delicious and healthy when you get creative with the ingredients you have in your home!

To make the most delicious, balanced, and energizing snack for any activity, these are just a few of the basic main ingredients you will need. Don't be afraid to get creative, I like to try different combinations of all these ingredients. I love that I get to customize what I put in every time!

How to Make the Best Healthy Trail Mix

INGREDIENTS/SUBSTITUTIONS

Nuts - cashews, walnuts, pecans, almonds, peanuts

Seeds - sunflower, pumpkin, chia

Fruits & Berries - dried strawberries, raisins, blueberries, banana chips, apricot, dried cherries

Sweet - dark chocolate chips, cacao nibs, semi-sweet chocolate chips

Savory/crunch - pretzels, popcorn, cereal, soybeans, roasted chickpeas

Nuts - This is the base ingredient for your trail mix. You want to pick something substantial but not too overpowering in taste. Some popular choices are cashews, walnuts, and peanuts. but you can add whatever is your favorite.

Seeds - Seeds are similar to nuts in terms of texture, but the sizes vary from pumpkin seeds to chia seeds, so it won't always be a 1:1 ratio when measuring. Our favorite seeds to use are pumpkin, sunflower, and chia. They are not only tasty, but they add lots of good nutrients to your snack.

Fruits and berries - Fruits add a good balance of sweetness to your trail mix by providing natural sugars that are healthy and delicious. You can't go wrong with whatever fruit or berries you choose, and you can even mix more than one. Some of my favorites to use are dried strawberries, cranberries, or banana chips.

Savory - This can be anything from popcorn and pretzels to roasted soybeans, and chickpeas. A lot of the time the savory ingredients also give the trail mix a diverse set of textures. Some people like to add cereal to their trail mixes to give them a nice crunchy texture change from the nuts and fruits. You can use pretty much any cereal you would like.

Sweet - If you want to add a little sweet treat, go for it! You can add mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, yogurt-covered raisins, or anything you would like. Our favorite sweet ingredient is dark chocolate chips. It satisfies the sweet tooth and is still super good for you. Make sure that you balance out how much you add with other ingredients, it can be easy to overdo it.

 Ratio

  • 1 cup nuts
  • 1 cup seeds
  • 1/2 cup sweets
  • 1 cup savory/crunchy
