What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances found in food and produced naturally to protect the body from free-radical cells.

Free radicals can cause damage to cells and DNA, which can contribute to and cause numerous diseases. Some diseases that may occur as a result of an overabundance of free radicals are heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Free radicals form naturally during the metabolic process, but can also be caused by stress and exposure to smoke or other pollutants. If an excess of free radicals does occur, it is referred to as oxidative stress. This can damage cells and DNA, and lead to chronic illness. Other symptoms include fatigue and a weak immune system.

Why incorporate more antioxidants into my diet?

Your body can only fight off so many free radicals without help, consuming antioxidants can help fight and prevent the harmful cells.

Antioxidants help prevent free radicals by boosting the body’s immune system to fight degenerative cells. To stop an already formed free radical, antioxidants give an electron to the free radical to prevent further damage to other cells.

The main antioxidants are Beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and manganese. These compounds can be found in many organic foods and are incredibly strong antioxidants.
